The PIN is useless in Visa contactless transactions

Academics bypass PINs for Visa contactless payments By- Aarti Jatan Researchers: "In other words, the PIN is useless in Visa contactless transactions." A team of academics from Switzerland has discovered a security bug that can be abused to bypass PIN codes for Visa contactless payments. This means that if criminals are ever in possession of a stolen Visa contactless card, they can use it to pay for expensive products, above the contactless transaction limit, and without needing to enter the card's PIN code. The attack is extremely stealthy, academics said, and can be easily mistaken for a customer paying for products using a mobile/digital wallet installed on their smartphone. However, in reality, the attacker is actually paying with data received from a (stolen) Visa contactless card that is hidden on the attacker's body. HOW THE ATTACK WORKS According to the research team, a successful attack requires four components: (1+2) two Android smartphones, (3) a special An

What Cyber Security Means to Elders

What Security Means to Elders By- Aarti Jatan Recently,    McAfee  conducted a survey of 600 families and professionals in the U.S. to better understand what matters to them—in terms of security and the lives they want to lead online. The following article reflects what they shared with us, and allows us to share it with you in turn, with the aim of helping you and your family stay safer and more secure.  1 Findings from Pew Research Center show that  internet usage by elders has risen from an average of 14% in 2000 to 67% on average 2017 . As these numbers continue to rise, we wanted to find out what was important to them—particularly as more and more of their lives go online. While many of us take shopping, surfing, and banking online for granted, they mark a dramatic shift for elders. They’ve gone from the days when banking meant banker’s hours and paper passbook to around-the-clock banking and a mobile app. And even if they use the internet sparingly,  banking, finances, and commer

Breathing new life into old gadgets for a better home office

Breathing new life into old gadgets for a better home office By- Aarti Jatan Create a digital comfort zone using any old tablets, laptops, and modems you have on hand to work from home safely. At the office, the company provides everything you need to do your job: powerful computers, Internet access, a headset, and a webcam for videoconferencing. Not everything goes so smoothly when you are working remotely. Of course, some companies provide a laptop or pay for your Internet connection. But many people have to equip their home offices using their own resources. That requires a lot of effort. Some families find themselves sharing just one home computer with no webcam whatsoever, for example, and find the Wi-Fi doesn’t even reach every room in the house. One option is to buy a ton of new equipment. But you might be able to save a considerable amount of money by repurposing old gadgets, instead. If you still have a couple of outdated smartphones, an ancient laptop, or any other digital de

How to secure PayPal

How to secure PayPal By- Aarti Jatan Your online finances need proper protection. Learn how to secure your PayPal account. With hundreds of millions of users around the world, PayPal has long been an international leader in the electronic payments industry. But as we know, money never fails to attract fraud, especially now, with as much of life as possible taking place online. Here is what you need to do to stay safe when sending or receiving money through PayPal. How secure is PayPal? As a matter of fact, PayPal is quite a reliable platform that maintains a high level of security — and keeps improving it. Thus, the company has an official program deploying white hat hackers to unearth vulnerabilities (the so-called bug bounty), under which it has already paid out almost $4 million since 2018. The program also covers several other services owned by PayPal, such as Venmo. PayPal also treats its users’ data responsibly: It did have one reliably reported leak, in 2017, but the leak invol
